Morning Star Newsletter – October-November 2014 Edition

Welcome to The Morning Star…
the occasionally updated newsletter of the Peter Mayer Group

Greetings from the Wild West

What’s up… to all of my friends out there? It’s hard to believe but I am sitting in Las Vegas, looking at performing our last show of the year with Jimmy Buffett at the MGM Grand tomorrow night. It’s been a great year that has gone by like lightning. From Texas to the Midwest, the Northeast, across the pond to Paris, and now on the left coast, we have covered a lot of territory with a good batch of songs and great people to travel with I might say. Thanks to all of you who welcomed us along the way in whatever garb or group we are in at the time.

Meeting of The Minds

Hugo Duarte Benefit at the Smokin’ Tuna Saloon, October 30!

As many of you know, our friend Hugo Duarte has been battling an illness, and treatments lately have prevented him from performing. Being sick is bad enough, but the added stress of medical bills and keeping the lights on when you can’t work is a nightmare. So I hope those of you in the Keys will join Scott Kirby and Sunny Jim as they host a benefit for Hugo at the The Smokin’ Tuna Saloon on October 30th, at 7:00 pm.  There will be lots of special musical guests on hand and you’ll have the opportunity to contribute to a great night for Hugo.

Hole and a String- Cote PM Model

This month’s special instrument is actually two, both a guitar and a microphone that I used to record the track mentioned above “Land Called Summer.” Many of you have seen me play a Rosewood and Cedar Cote guitar made by Gary Cote, a guitar maker from New Hampshire. This one is a “PM” model that was built for me by Gary when he heard I loved the sound of the JPB Martin guitar model, which is a Jimmy Buffett triple O Polywog model with Sitka Spruce top and Mahogany sides. It has a bright and punchy sound without the big boomy bottom of bigger slot head guitars. Since the 12 fret models mean that the neck meets the guitar body at the 12th fret, normally it limits your ability to access the high notes. We decided to make this a cutaway to accommodate access to all the frets, hence the “PM” model name. It is a great little strumming guitar and sounds phenomenal with a slide.
While out on this most recent Buffett tour, I recorded “Land Called Summer” in my room with an Aphex USB microphone called Microphone X. It’s an excellent sounding USB Mic that you can use as a recording interface on the road. It plugs straight into the USB port of any computer. It’s got onboard software that gives you Aphex sound shaping capabilities and also a built in headphone amplifier as well. I found this to be very useful for road and travel use in that it is sooo compact for the sound quality it delivers. Very Cool!
