Approaching Caroline
Roger Guth/Peter Mayer
At the Starlight Cafe she holds them in a daze
With words and her looks
Black is her hair gray are her eyes they say she’s written a book
She dances to the gypsy music they play
In the shadows I have to smile
And I forget I’m captured for a while
Somewhere between her life and my dreams
Is where she likes to hide
She says, “we all fade away” then expects me to say, “it’s good to be alive”
Order me a whisky convention be damned
Roll up your sleeves if you might
I’m willing to bet that you just might get me tonight
Getting closer she’ll be fine
She’s approaching Caroline
On the edge or passing time
She’s approaching Caroline
I asked her to dance she said, “not a chance” and pulled me to embrace
The familiar song seemed twice as long and half as commonplace
A stranger appeared, said “may I cut in?”
She says “not on your life,
I’ve already got a heart to break tonight”
The night runs down I look around and she’s leaving at the door
I ask her why she says time still flies no matter what the score
It’s better this way trust me on this
Someday you’ll understand
And I stand as helpless as I began
Getting closer she’ll be fine
She’s approaching Caroline
One the edge or passing time
She’s approaching Caroline

Peter Mayer’s music is like the unusally beautiful sunsets that make you just stop and peacefully take in the beauty and grace of it all!
